Temporary importation, simplified

Mexico’s customs authority updated the temporary importation framework for foreign-registered aircraft in late 2024, introducing a clearer distinction between private and commercial operations and tightening the window for extensions.

Private operations

  • Maximum stay: 6 months, renewable once for an additional 6 months.
  • Documentation required on entry: aircraft registration, operator ID, and insurance.
  • Exit must be logged at a customs-authorized airport.

Commercial operations

  • Temporary importation tied to the IBP lifecycle.
  • Cargo and passenger manifests required per segment.
  • Commercial users now fall under the updated SAT fiscal audit framework.

Practical impact

Most private operators will not see a material change day-to-day. Commercial operators with complex fleet rotations will need to tighten recordkeeping — especially around fiscal registrations and entry/exit logs. Our permits team is available to walk through specifics for individual operations.
